Cody Anthony moves the puck up the ice during The Junior Pens game against the Sackville Blazers on Jan. 13 at the East Hants Sportsplex.
LANTZ: Matt Doudelet’s stick was on fire scoring a hat-trick, but it was two newly acquired players that helped push the East Hants Junior Penguins to victory on Jan. 13.
Melvin Day turned away 38 of 41 shots he faced in his debut between the pipes for the Penguins, and Mitchell Elgi picked up an assist as East Hants defeated the Sackville Blazers 5-3 at the Kieth Miller Arena in the East Hants Sportsplex.
Shayne Sullivan had a goal and an assist, while Thomas Glover with the opening goal of the contest, also scored. Matt Anthony chipped in with three helpers, while Justin Campbell added two.
Single helpers were credited to Cole Isenor, Cody Anthony, and Alex Porter.
Elgi joined his third team in just over a week. The 19-year-old was dealt from the Bay Ducks to Eastern Shore, who then shipped him off to East Hants even before he had suited up with them. In exchange, the Pens traded future considerations the other way.
In eight games with the Ducks, Elgi had an assist and 43 penalty minutes.
Meanwhile, Day–a one-time prospect of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles– was brought in to solidify the Pens goaltending down the stretch drive. East Hants has decided to go with Day and upstart Kinnon MacMillan as their two goalies, releasing veteran Jon Doucet in the process.
The 21-year-old Day is in his third year in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, after spending seasons with Glace Bay in 2009-2010, before being traded to Pictou County that same year. He suited up with the Scotians in 2010-2011, and played six games this season, before being released. Day was released by the Scotians after they
With the slumping Scotians this season, Day appeared in six games, recording a 4.23 goals-against-average (GAA), surrendering 26 goals in 368.42 minutes. In 2010-2011, he finished with a 4.14 GAA (92 goals against) in 1,332.77 minutes covering 23 games.
Day will be the fourth goaltender to suit up in a Pens jersey.
Besides MacMillan and Jon Doucet, Adam Sweeney also laced them up for one game–a 4-3 overtime win over Pictou–before his rights were shipped to Glace Bay’s waiver pick in the 2012-2013 waiver draft, which is to be used by Oct. 31, 2012.
Head coach/general manager Joel Isenor said the two trades make the Pens better.
“I think these two players make us a better team then we were yesterday,” he said on the teams website. “Hopefully, they will help us not only make it into the playoffs, but take us on a deep run.”
East Hants was in Sackville on Jan. 16 for the rematch with the Blazers.
The team returns to action on Jan. 20 at the Keith Miller Arena in the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz when they welcome the Brookfield Elks in as they start a four game in seven day stretch. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
East Hants hits the road to the Bay on Jan.21, Brookfield on Jan. 23, and in Windsor against the Royals on Jan. 27.
