Pens looking to re-capture winning streak

Posted on February 1, 2012 Pat Healey

LANTZ: The East Hants Junior Penguins are looking to regain the winning touch that had them on the path to success during the first half of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League season.
The Penguins will be happy to see the calendar turn to February after a 3-4-0-0 (win-loss-overtime loss-shootout loss) record, including three losses in their final four games of the month which saw them score just 10 goals, while surrendering 19.
East Hants fell 4-2 at the hands of rival Brookfield Elks on Jan. 24 at Don Hnederson Memorial Sportsplex, before getting spanked 5-0 by the Windsor Royals at Hants County Arena on Jan. 27. The team’s home game Jan. 20 against the Elks was postponed due to the weather. No makeup date has yet been announced.
The Pens sit in third spot, but the up and down slide has seen their gap behind the second-place Windsor Royals widen.
Against the Elks, Alex Porter and Trevor Thorne found the back of the net. Assists went to newly acquire Mitchell Elgi and Scott MacDonald.
Kinnon MacMillan was tagged with the loss surrendering three goals on 52 shots.
In Windsor, Melvin Day saw three pucks get behind him on 29 shots, before MacMillan came on in relief. He stopped 13 of 15 pucks in 29:03 of action.
The game was one that saw a lot of tyrips to the penalty box with East Hants credited with 54 penalty minutes.
East Hants returns home Feb. 3 when they welcome the Bay Ducks in their lone scheduled game of the week at the Keith Miller Arena in the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Pens will then face the Eastern Shore Mariners at home on Feb. 10, before a return engagement in Musquodoboit Harbour on Feb. 11.
