The Hants North Rural High Flames senior boys’ basketball team finished just short of a playoff spot in the 2012 New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic
The Flames sported a respectable 2-2 record during the week long national tournament starting on Jan. 30 and ending with the championship game on Feb. 4. The tournament brought teams from as far as British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and representatives from Atlantic Canadian provinces to the small community of New Waterford in Cape Breton.
The tournament host, Breton Education Centre, greeted the Flames to a rude awakening with a 82-40 defeat in the first game after the opening ceremonies. Their slow start continued into the next day, narrowly losing by a score of 51-45 to Nechako Valley Secondary Vikings from British Columbia.
However, the boys turned it around in their next game, edging Saskatchewan’s Yorkton Regional High School by two points in a 58-56 victory. In the Flames last game, they defeated Quebec’s Ecole Secondaire Roger-Comtois to a score of 53-42.
The two victories were a little too late to get them into the championship. Three Oaks Senior High School, a team from Prince Edward Island, won gold over Corner Brook High School in the Saturday afternoon championship game.
