MacASKILL, Murray Arthur
MacASKILL, Murray Arthur - April 3, 1923-June 16, 2008. With sadness we announce the death of our dear husband, father, brother and friend, Murray MacAskill (Kennectook/ Windsor), who died on June 16, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born in Kennetcook, Hants Co., a son of the late Creelman and Lavina MacAskill. Murray's memory will be forever cherished by Ethel (Wilcox), his devoted wife of 60 years. He also leaves to mourn his older son and daughter-in-law, David and Barb, Sommerset; grandson, Mike and partner Barb; his only daughter, Rev. Lorraine MacAskill, Dartmouth; and his younger son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Barb, Dartmouth; his grandson, Ken and wife Kim, along with his great-grandchildren, Shaylin, Ryan and Liam, who, with love, called him "Old Grampy!" Murray is also survived by members of his family of birth, Ellamae Elliot, Louise Gilliatt, Effie (Robert) Skalitzky, Harris (Shirley) MacAskill; also his brother-in-law, Gerald Cooper, and sister-in-law, Mildred MacAskill. Murray was predeceased by baby Arthur (stillborn) and by his beloved son-in-law (Lorraine's husband), Randy Sheppard. He was predeceased by his brothers, Percy and F. James "Jim"; his sisters, Annie MacDonald, Berneice Cooper, Jeannette Jones; half-sisters, Susan Miller and Ola Dalrymple, and half-brothers, Creelman and Leslie. We are grateful that Dad shared our lives. He did not demand a lot of life. He cherished his rural roots, and he loved being with people. He was always good for a heated political discussion. He loved picking raspberries by the hour, or fishing by a bubbling brook. He enjoyed an evening of watching sports, having himself played, and coached ball for many years. He also enjoyed playing a game of crib with Mum after supper (with the loser having to do the dishes!). After his retirement, he spent many creative hours in his carpentry shop and having his whole family gathered together around our family table brought him much joy. The influence of Murray's life went beyond his family. He was honoured to have been a veteran of the Second World War. He was appreciative to have been made a life member of the W.D. Lawrence Masonic Lodge, which he served along with the Eastern Star in several capacities, including District Deputy Grand Master. He was a faithful, lifelong member of Kennetcook United Church, having been Clerk of Session; he made other contributions over many, many years. He often made a quiet, unknown amount of support to folks in need - emotional, financial and spiritual - that will be known only to the receiver. We are deeply grateful for those of you who have been our companions over this recent painful period. Thank you to the angels of Unit 500, Hants Community Hospital; the staff and residents of Gladys Manning Home, Windsor, and to all of you who have supported us with care and prayer. There will be no visitation, Service was held in Kennetcook United Church on Wednesday, June 18, followed by a reception at the Kennetcook Fire Hall.
