SCDA looking for feedback

SHUBENACADIE: There might be snow on the ground, but that doesn't mean members of the Shubenacadie Community Development Association (SCDA) aren't thinking about warmer weather.

The group, made up of Shubenacadie residents and business owners are preparing for what will undoubtedly be another busy summer, but before they can do that, they need some input from the community.

The opportunity for Shubenacadie residents to offer suggestions and approve the 2010 manadate for the SCDA will come Feb. 2, when a public meeting will be held at the Shubenacadie Community Hall, scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

"We have to do this every year," said Les Jayasinghe, president of the SCDA. "This meeting is where we discuss the work we've done to date, about what we're looking at doing and get input from the community on what is next for us."

Since its inception, volunteers with the SCDA have been busy. Some of their projects include the construction of McCoul Park, phase one completion of the MacInnis Trail and the creation of a hanging flower basket and holiday wreath program.

"Everything we've done wouldn't be possible without the support and guidance of our community," said Jayasinghe. "This includes the financial contributions and volunteer hours that have gone into each of our projects.

"Of course the Municipality of East Hants, the Province of Nova Scotia and the federal government have all played an integral role with their financial support as well."

Since McCoul Park and the MacInnis Trail have opened, Jayasinghe says many in the community are taking advantage of them. He says the MacInnis Trail is being used by residents of all ages, regardless of their physical abilities.

"We want to hear from the community and see where their priorities are," he said. "Phase two of the trail will be on the agenda, as well as some other things we're discussing. This is their opportunity to share their ideas and opinions."
